Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) represents a significant advancement in prenatal care, offering parents the most sensitive non-invasive method available today to assess the likelihood of their baby being affected by chromosomal conditions. Down’s syndrome, Edwards’ syndrome, and Patau’s syndrome are screened for alongside sex chromosomal conditions.
NIPT provides crucial insights early in pregnancy, helping parents make informed decisions about their baby’s health. We are proud to offer NIPT for Eastleigh, giving local families easy access to this state-of-the-art screening technology without the need to travel far.
NIPT works by analysing tiny fragments of DNA (cell-free DNA) that are released from the placenta into the mother’s bloodstream. By examining these DNA fragments, the test can assess whether the baby has a high or low probability of being affected by specific chromosomal conditions. Non-Invasive Prenatal Tests identify and analyse fetal DNA, making them far more accurate than conventional NHS screening
As NIPT can be performed from as early as 10 weeks into pregnancy (or 9 weeks for the Panorama test), it provides parents with timely and accurate information, offering peace of mind and the ability to plan ahead if needed.
At our clinic based in Southampton, the process begins with an ultrasound scan performed by one of our highly trained and experienced Sonographers. This scan ensures that the pregnancy is viable and dated beyond 10 weeks, which is essential for the test. Following the scan, a simple blood sample is taken from the mother for testing.
This process is quick, non-invasive, and safe for both mother and baby.
Once the sample has arrived at the laboratory, results are typically available within 5-7 working days.
As soon as the results are ready, we will contact you by phone to discuss the findings. We will also email you a comprehensive report for your records. If the test results show a high probability of a chromosomal condition, we provide the option to speak with a genetic counsellor, giving you the chance to explore next steps and receive expert guidance.
This genetic counselling service is included in the cost of the NIPT test, ensuring you receive the support and information you need at no extra cost.
